What You Need To Know

The S-Line will keep running during construction, but there will be brief service interruptions for some upgrades.

UTA and Salt Lake City are working together to keep disruptions as minimal as possible. If there are major street or access closures, we will post them ahead of time on this webpage, on social media, or in Rider Insider newsletters (subscribe here). Service alerts will be shared (sign up here), and bus bridge service will be available if needed.

Upcoming Traffic Impacts: August Through October 2026*

Construction is continuing on the S-Line Extension Project in the Sugar House area. Over the next 2 months, several work areas will affect traffic, parking, access, and travel routes.

Please follow posted signs, allow extra travel time, and use caution near active work zones.

*Dates are subject to change due to weather, utility coordination, materials, equipment, or field conditions.

Simpson Ave., McClelland Street to 1100 East: Now through mid-September

• Full closure of Simpson Avenue remains in place through mid-September.
• After the closure ends, one lane to be open in each direction.
• Crews are completing utility, drainage, guideway, paving, and striping work.

McClelland Street and Sugarmont Drive intersection: Mid-September to late October

• Full closure is expected for approximately 6 weeks on McClelland Street, just to the north of Sugarmont, to install the track across the road.
• Drivers should use posted detours and allow extra travel time.
• Work includes guideway installation, roadway restoration, paving, signs, and striping.

Simpson Avenue, 1100 East to Highland Drive: Mid-September through late November

• Full closure expected for approximately 12 weeks.
• Crews will be completing utility, drainage, guideway, sidewalk, landscaping, and building demolition work.

Old Deseret Industries Building demolition — September

• The building on the northwest corner of Simpson Avenue and Highland Drive will be demolished as part of the September construction work.
• Nearby residents, businesses, and travelers may notice equipment, noise, dust, and construction activity.
• Additional access or travel impacts will be shared as details are confirmed.

Sugar House Center Parking Lot: Ongoing through March 2027

• Construction will continue in and around the parking lot.
• Expect changes to parking availability, circulation, and access routes.
• Work includes excavation, retaining walls, platform construction, utilities, paving, flatwork, signs, and striping.

Sugarmont Drive near the Aquatic Center: Late September or Early October

• A short-duration full closure or directional closures are expected.
• Details will be shared in advance so drivers, pedestrians, and nearby users can plan ahead.

Highland Drive: Mid-October

• Full closure of the intersection at Highland Drive and Simpson Avenue is expected in mid-October and will last approximately 5 days.
• Work includes guideway, curb, drainage, roadway restoration, paving, signing, and striping.
• Detour and access information will be provided before the closure begins.

What To Expect

During construction, residents, businesses, cyclists, pedestrians, and travelers may experience:

• Temporary lane closures and traffic detours
• Sidewalk and pedestrian route adjustments
• Construction equipment and increased activity in work zones
• Periodic changes to driveway, business, or property access
• Noise, dust, and lighting associated with construction operations

Parley's Trail is expected to remain open during construction, although temporary reroutes may occur near active work zones.

Why This Is Happening

This extension is a key investment in sustainable transportation for the Sugar House business district, bringing the streetcar closer to shops, restaurants, new housing, and the University of Utah Sugar House Health Center.
