UTA secures over 41 million in federal funding to upgrade fleet with clean diesel and CNG vehicles

SALT LAKE CITY (Dec. 17, 2025) — The Utah Transit Authority has been awarded more than $41 million in federal grant funding to modernize its bus fleet, replace aging vehicles, and continue delivering safe, reliable and environmentally responsible transit service across the region.

Through the Federal Transit Administration’s Bus and Bus Facilities Program, UTA will receive $21.33 million to purchase 25 new clean diesel buses, replacing older vehicles that have reached the end of their useful life. The project supports UTA’s State of Good Repair plan and includes workforce training and equipment to ensure operators and maintenance staff are prepared to support the new buses.

UTA has also been awarded $20.5 million through the FTA’s Low or No Emission Vehicle Program to procure 24 new low-emission compressed natural gas buses. These vehicles will replace aging buses in UTA’s existing CNG fleet.

“This significant federal investment allows the Utah Transit Authority to continue modernizing our fleet while delivering the safe, reliable and affordable transit service our riders depend on every day,” said Jay Fox, executive director of UTA. “We are grateful to the Federal Transit Administration and to Utah’s congressional delegation for their strong support and continued commitment to clean, dependable and safe transportation. These new buses will improve air quality, strengthen our state of good repair, and ensure our operators and maintenance teams have the tools they need to connect communities across our region for years to come.”

Both grants are expected to be executed within the next 12 months.

UTA intentionally maintains a mix of propulsion technologies across its fleet to reduce exposure to fuel market volatility while maintaining flexibility to meet service needs. The new clean diesel and CNG buses will support routes throughout the UTA service area, expanding access to jobs, healthcare, education and recreation while improving air quality.
